Every student experiences two terms while pursuing their UG and PG degrees: SGPA and CGPA, when the college result sheets start coming out every semester. Both scores use the same grade-point system, but they are not identical, and they cannot be used together, as that can lead to confusion in the course of admissions, scholarship applications, or even a simple discussion about marks with parents and teachers.

This article explains SGPA and CGPA in simple language, gives the exact formula for each with a worked example, and describes where the two scores are different. It also covers percentage conversion, the grading scale colleges follow, difference between sgpa and cgpa, what is sgpa and cgpa, and how they are being measured.

What Is SGPA?

SGPA full form is Semester Grade Point Average, is the grade a college gives at the end of one semester, taking into consideration the grades earned in all the subjects taken during that term. Every subject has a fixed number of credits, and every grade has a grade point associated with it. SGPA combines the two into a single number.

The SGPA is calculated by the college right after every semester and hence is good for short-term progress and not the entire academic record. If a student gets a good score in one semester but not so good in another, the difference is clearly visible in the SGPA of each semester. It becomes easier to know the subjects that need more attention before the next term.

What Is CGPA?

CGPA full form is Cumulative Grade Point Average. While SGPA only takes into account one semester, CGPA sums the performance of all the semesters completed so far. CGPA gives colleges and employers a complete picture of a student’s academic record. Most of the colleges give the CGPA on the final certificate, which is the most important for job applications after graduation.

CGPA is a reflection of the entire course and not a single term. Hence, it changes gradually and is a better indicator of the trend in performance. Colleges and recruiters trust CGPA over SGPA because a single average or below-average semester shouldn’t decide.

How Do You Calculate SGPA?

The SGPA formula is SGPA = Total (Credit × Grade Point) of that semester ÷ Total Credits of that semester. To find the grade points for one subject, multiply the grade point of the grade scored by the credits assigned to it, then add this value across every subject taken that semester, as shown below.

Subject Credits Grade Grade Point Grade Point x Credits
Subject 1 4 A 9 36
Subject 2 3 B+ 8 24
Subject 3 3 A 9 27
Subject 4 4 B 7 28
Subject 5 2 A+ 10 20

Total credits for the semester add up to 16, and total grade points earned add up to 135 (36 + 24 + 27 + 28 + 20). Dividing 135 by 16 gives an SGPA of 8.44. This score reflects performance for this one semester only and does not carry any weight from earlier or later terms.

How Do You Calculate CGPA?

The direct CGPA formula is CGPA = Total (Credit × Grade Point) of ALL semesters ÷ Total Credits of ALL semesters. If the SGPA of each semester is already known along with its credits, CGPA can also be calculated as the sum of (SGPA x Credits) for every semester, divided by the total credits, as shown below.

Semester Credits SGPA SGPA x Credits
Semester 1 16 8.0 128
Semester 2 18 7.8 140.4
Semester 3 17 8.5 144.5
Semester 4 16 8.2 131.2

Total credits across all four semesters add up to 67, and the total of SGPA x Credits adds up to 544.1. Dividing 544.1 by 67 gives a CGPA of 8.12, which reflects combined performance across all four semesters, and this same method works no matter how many semesters a student has completed.

What Is the Difference Between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA and CGPA are calculated on same grade point system but they are measures of performance at different scales and are used for different purposes. SGPA is an overview of one semester whereas CGPA works more like an overall sum of every semester combined. The table below shows out how the two scores differ point by point.

Factor SGPA CGPA
Full Form Semester Grade Point Average Cumulative Grade Point Average
Scope One semester only Every semester completed so far
Calculated After every semester After every year or at course completion
Purpose Tracks semester-wise progress Tracks overall academic performance
Impact On That semester's record only Final degree, placements, higher-education applications
Changes Over Time Fixed once the semester ends Updates every time a new semester is added

Neither score replaces the other, since both appear on the same academic transcript. SGPA tells a student and their teachers how the last few months went, while CGPA tells universities and recruiters how the entire course has gone so far, which is why most application forms ask for CGPA rather than SGPA.

How Do You Convert CGPA to Percentage?

Most of the colleges in India follow a 10-point grading system. The formula used for conversion of CGPA to percentage is Percentage = CGPA x 9.5. For example, if your CGPA is 8.12, then it works out to 8.12*9.5 = 77.14 percent, which gives you a rough percentage figure of the entire course completed so far.

The 9.5 multiplier is used widely but not at every institution in the country. Other colleges might have their own conversion table or use a different multiplier, so it’s a good idea to check the exact formula on the official website before using a converted percentage on any form or application. You can use CollegeSathi’s CGPA calculator before filling out any application form, whether it is for study abroad or any Indian university or applying for a job.

How Do You Convert SGPA to Percentage?

The same formula applies to SGPA. Multiplying the SGPA by 9.5 gives an approximate percentage for that particular semester, and an SGPA of 8.44 works out to 8.44 x 9.5, which equals 80.18 percent for that term. This percentage reflects only that one semester and not the complete academic record built up so far.

Which Grading Scale Do Colleges Use for SGPA and CGPA?

Most colleges in India use a 10-point grading system, where every letter grade lines up with a fixed grade point. The table below lists a grading scale followed by many institutions, though the exact grade points can vary slightly from one college or department to another, so it is worth double-checking the official scale before comparing scores.

CGPA Percentage Grade
10.0 95.0% O
9.5 90.25% O
9.0 85.5% A+
8.5 80.75% A+
8.0 76.0% A
7.5 71.25% B+
7.0 66.5% B+
6.5 61.75% B
6.0 57.0% C
5.5 52.25% C

Note: Based on the 10-point CGPA scale (×9.5 formula) used by most Indian universities.

Grading scales are not the same everywhere, and it would be a good idea to check the official grading policy of a specific college before comparing scores with a friend at another college. A grade point of 8 at one college and 8 at another could still mean a slightly different percentage once converted.

Is CGPA the Same as GPA?

CGPA and GPA both measure overall academic performance, but they are not identical, and students applying abroad often need to convert one into the other. Learners going to study abroad generally use GPA, or Grade Point Average, which is calculated on a 4-point scale, whereas CGPA in India almost always runs on a 10-point scale. Comparing the numbers directly would be misleading.

Foreign universities usually convert Indian CGPAs to their own GPA scale using a standard formula. However, a CGPA of 8 (out of 10) doesn't necessarily mean a GPA of 8 (out of a different scale), so you should check with the university you are applying to exactly what conversion method they use.

Why Do SGPA and CGPA Matter for Students?

SGPA and CGPA influence several decisions that come up well before the final result sheet is issued. The two scores add up to a student’s academic performance, and colleges, scholarship committees, and recruiters all look at these numbers a little differently, depending on what they are trying to evaluate.

  • Admission to higher education: most postgraduate programs, in India and abroad, set a minimum CGPA requirement for eligibility.
  • Scholarships: Many scholarship schemes use SGPA or CGPA cutoffs to shortlist candidates every semester or academic year.
  • Campus placements: companies often set a minimum CGPA for students to be eligible to sit for placement interviews.
  • Study abroad applications: foreign universities ask for CGPA and convert it to their own scale to compare applicants fairly.
  • Competitive exams: some exams ask candidates to submit percentage or CGPA details at the time of registration.

Conclusion

Both CGPA and SGPA are measures of academic performance but on a different scale. SGPA is the performance of a semester, and CGPA is the overall academic record accumulated throughout the course. Knowing the exact formula for each, and where they matter most, makes it easier to keep track of progress and present academic scores correctly wherever they are required.

Tracking SGPA every semester, rather than waiting for the final CGPA, helps a student notice a weak semester early and improve performance before it affects the overall academic record built up over the course of the degree. This small habit makes the final CGPA far less stressful to manage in the last year.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, CGPA is not the average of all SGPA scores. CGPA is a credit-weighted average of SGPA values, so semesters with more credits carry slightly more weight in the final number.

CGPA generally matters more for placements, higher studies, and study abroad applications since it reflects the entire course. SGPA still matters for tracking short-term progress each semester.

Yes, if a student performs better in one particular semester than their overall average. The same is true in reverse for a weaker semester.

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5 to get an approximate percentage under the commonly used formula. Always confirm the exact multiplier with the specific college, since some institutions use a different one.

It can lower the CGPA slightly, but the effect reduces as more semesters get added to the calculation. Strong performance in later semesters can bring the overall CGPA back up.

A CGPA of 7.5 or above is generally considered strong for most placement and higher-education requirements. Some competitive programs and top recruiters may look for a CGPA closer to 8 or higher.
