IGNOU offers a UGC-entitled PhD program in both full-time and part-time modes, alongside a wide range of IGNOU Online across UG, PG, diploma, and certificate levels. Students must complete the PhD program in 3 to 6 years. However, women candidates and PwD with 40% or more disability are given an additional 2 years to complete the program. The university receives applications for the PhD program from June to mid-July.

PhD admission in IGNOU is based on the scores of UGC-NET with JRF, UGC-NET, or RET entrance exam conducted by the university. All candidates also need to attend an interview or a viva-voce round. Who is Eligible for IGNOU PhD Admission?

Students must fulfil the eligibility requirements for the chosen discipline. If any candidate does not qualify for the eligibility criteria and still submits the form, the university will not consider such applications. The eligibility criteria for the IGNOU PhD Admission are explained below.

Academic Qualification

  • Candidates must have completed a 1-year master's degree after a 4-year bachelor's degree, or a 2-year master’s degree with a 3-year bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 55% aggregate marks or its equivalent in the master's degree.
  • Foreign national students must have completed an equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
  • M.Phil graduates from a foreign educational institute are also eligible. They must have secured 55% aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  • A 5% relaxation in marks is provided to SC, ST, OBC NCL, and EWS PwD candidates.

Admission Process and Selection Criteria

The university offers admission based on the 4 categories.

  • Category-I: UGC-NET with JRF
  • Category-II: UGC-NET (eligible for Assistant Professor and PhD)
  • Category-III: UGC-NET (eligible for PhD only)
  • Category-IV: University-level Entrance Test followed by Interview Selection Procedure.

Note: Applicants enrolling under Category-IV must select “Not Applicable” again UGC NET JRF during application form submission.

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam

The university conducted an online written entrance exam to shortlist candidates for the PhD program. Candidates with valid UGC NET/ JRF scores do not need to appear for the IGNOU PhD entrance exam. The university releases a list of candidates who are shortlisted for the entrance exam.

  • Step 1: Visit IGNOU’s official website.
  • Step 2: Click on the “result” button available at the top of the page.
  • Step 3: You'll be redirected to a new page, where you need to locate the link for the M.Phil/PhD entrance exam result.
  • Step 4: Enter your application number and password to log in, and your result will be displayed on the screen once submitted.

Qualifying candidates will be called for the interview/viva-vode round. They need to submit the following documents at the time of the interview:

How to Apply for IGNOU PhD Admission 2026?

To apply for the IGNOU PhD admission, eligible candidates have to submit the online application form. Check the step-by-step application process below:

Step 1: Registration

  • Visit the official website of IGNOU and register yourself by adding your Email ID and phone number.
  • All the admission-related details will be shared with the registered email ID and phone number only.
  • Already registered candidates need to log in using their credentials.

Step 2: Fill out the Application Form

  • All registered candidates must add the required details in the application form.
  • Ensure the complete information is accurate, as the university does not allow any modifications to the form.
  • Cross-check eligibility, category details, and selected program before submission.
  • Upload a scanned copy of all the documents.

Step 3: Application Fee

  • Applicants must pay the registration fee of ₹2000, which is non-refundable under any condition.
  • The fee can be paid via credit/ debit card, net banking, and UPI.
  • After the fee payment, take a printout of the form. It may be used for future reference.

What Documents are Required for PhD Admission?

All the documents must be scanned and self-attested. The following list of documents is required during the application process:

    • Passport-size photograph: It should be clear and have a white background only. The size of the photograph should be less than 100KB and uploaded in JPEG format.
  • Signature: You must sign on blank white paper. Its size is to be less than 100KB and in JPEG format.
  • Academic certificates: All relevant educational qualification documents must be under 200 KB in size and uploaded in JPEG or PDF format.
  • Category certificates: Reserved category students' certificates should be uploaded in JPEG or PDF format, with each file size kept under 200 KB.

  • The university does not accept any hard copy of the application form. It can only be filled out on the official website.

  • After the form submission, candidates can not change the uploaded signature, photograph, and their category.

Reservation Policy

  • 5% horizontal reservation is provided to Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) having not less than 40% benchmark disability.

Interview Process

  • The interviews are conducted in offline mode at the IGNOU headquarters in Delhi.
  • Part-time PhD applicants who are employed need to submit an NOC from their employer at the time of interview.

  • The candidature of any applicant will be cancelled if any provided information is found to be false.
  • Candidates will not receive individual communication regarding their selection status.
